Website Performance: Why Speed Pays
Visitors don't file complaints about slow pages. They just leave — and search engines notice both the slowness and the leaving.
Page speed affects everything downstream: conversion rates, bounce rates, ad costs, and search rankings, where Google's Core Web Vitals make performance an explicit factor. The frustrating part is that most slow websites are slow for mundane, fixable reasons.
The usual suspects
- Enormous images uploaded straight from a camera or designer
- Dozens of plugins or scripts, each "only" adding a little
- No caching, so every visit rebuilds every page from scratch
- Cheap or overloaded hosting doing its best
- Third-party embeds — chat widgets, trackers, video — loading before your content
Where to spend effort first
Measure before touching anything; tools like PageSpeed Insights show where the seconds actually go. In our experience the biggest wins, in rough order, are image optimization, caching, removing what isn't needed, and right-sizing hosting. Deep code optimization is real but usually comes last — most sites have cheaper wins waiting.
Performance is also a maintenance habit. A fast site stays fast when someone owns watching it.
